The location and design of the filter box depends on the model and type of washing machine. On most front loading machines, the lint filter is located on the outside of the machine, typically near the bottom front panel. It is easy to see once you know where to look and usually has a small door that opens for access. On top loading machines, the filter is often found inside the washing drum itself.
Many washing machine drums have a removable bottom. Inside the drum, you may notice a small plastic cover. Carefully pry this cover upward. Underneath, you will see a screw located in the center. Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove this screw. Once the screw is out, lift the bottom section of the drum upward and remove it. You will then see the filter area where dirt, lint, coins, hair, and residue accumulate.
Pour out the collected debris and rinse the filter thoroughly with warm water. Use an old toothbrush or small scrub brush to remove any stubborn buildup. Pay special attention to corners and crevices where grime often hides. After the filter is clean, use a cloth to wipe down the inside of the washing drum and the surrounding area. This helps remove any remaining residue and prevents odors from forming. Once everything is dry and clean, reassemble the parts in the same order and secure the screw firmly.
How Often to Clean and Why It Matters
It is best to clean the washing machine filter at least once a month. Doing so helps maintain proper water flow and prevents dirt from returning to your clothes. Regular cleaning also reduces musty smells, prevents mold growth, and keeps bacteria from spreading inside the machine. A clean washing machine means cleaner clothes that smell fresher and last longer.
In addition to cleaning the filter, you can occasionally run an empty wash cycle with white vinegar. Pour the vinegar directly into the drum and use a light spin or short wash cycle. This helps break down soap residue, mineral buildup, and lingering odors inside the machine.
